The Bisexual College Experiment — How’d I Miss It?

It’s a trope…but how much truth is there to it?

I see a lot of cultural jokes lately, but possibly I’m just more tuned into them now that I know I’m bisexual (technically, pansexual.) There’s a lot of “this is an experiment” and “gay until graduation” and “women having sex isn’t real sex,” themes that I’m trying to unpack.

But also…in my own personal history, how did I miss the clues?

Granted, there are WAY more signs that I was always polyamorous….and possibly my desire for women just wasn’t strong enough to infiltrate the compulsory monogamy everywhere. Like, “If I can only pick one, it wouldn’t be a woman….but now that I can pick more, there’s room?” I’m not sure that’s exactly where I’m at right now, but that sounds right for describing where I was, mentally.

Here are some other themes I’m exploring:

Representation in media:

It’s getting better but I cannot think of any media I consumed pre-2018 besides Chasing Amy that featured a bisexual character. Oh, and I guess Samantha Jones on Sex and the City (season 4 only) but they never say that word — they talk about her lesbian relationship. More recently, I noticed a bit of this in the later seasons of Jane the Virgin and Crazy Ex-Girlfriend and Rosa from Brooklyn…
