This is timely for me, as it’s winter and I have been in a sex drought until recently. I need Vitamin D from the sunshine, and also the other kind, commonly referred to by the same name except the D is for dick. (But don’t limit yourself to just that! There’s fingers, mouths, toys, and grinding on whatever works for you, ladies.)

I want to specifically address this piece to people socialized as women. We have different social standards about our orgasms. They are supposed to be simultaneous and pornographic, with the societally-defined right man, and you should come from penetrative sex without foreplay and you shouldn’t give any instructions about doing it better or more slowly or in a particular position. Even pleasuring yourself was verboten for most of us raised in the last century, although that applies to those socialized as boys as well. (Despite the numerous wanking jokes that are quite pervasive…it may be expected, but it’s still shamed.) I still masturbate on my own frequently, but it rarely achieves the same height, even with the extremely smutty books I like to read before bed. It is quick and reliable, and definitely helps me sleep. But even then, I was not keeping the same pace as I was at this time last year.
